How to Display Day of the Week in Excel using a Custom Format

For this example, we need to display the day of the week alongside specified dates in another column. For this example, we’ll have our dates in Column A and we’ll display the day of the week in Column B. Here is how we’ll use custom formatting to achieve our goal.

How to Display the Day of the Week in Excel

  1. Select cells B1:B10 and type the formula =A1 assuming your dates begun in Cell A1.
  2. Press CTRL+Enter.
  3. Right click the selected cells and then click on Format Cells.
  4. Make sure the Number tab is selected and click on Custom below Category.
  5. In the Type box, change the number format to dddd.
  6. Click OK.

You should noe be seeing the days of the week in Column B providing that your dates in Column A are in the correct format. This should work in Excel 97, 2000, 2003 and 2007.
